Sitar Maestro, Pandit Ravi Shankar Passes Away At 92
Pandit Ravi Shankar, the sitar virtuoso who enthralled the world with his music for more than six decades of his career is no more. He passed away at a San Diego hospital at the age of 92.
Pandit Ravi Shankar was born in Varanasi on April 7, 1920 as Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury. He had started his career as a dancer but quit dancing in 1938 to learn the sitar under court musician Allauddin Khan.
He received the Padma Bhushan in 1967, Padma Vibhushan in 1981 and Bharat Ratna in 1999. He is also the three-times grammy award winner.
Pandit Ravi Shankar’s music became known to the western world due to his association with George Harrison of ‘The Beatles’band. Harrison became proficient in the instrument under his guidance. Ravi Shankar also taught jazz icon John Coltrane.
