This is a do or die match for India. If doesn’t go for India, things may become very difficult for Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Because if India loses this match today they will lose the series against a foe that Indians never want to lose and will erupt against Dhoni like never before. He may have to lose his captaincy in test and even one day formats to compensate the loss, though he will still make it in the playing 11 in all the formats of the game, at least right now.
We recently lost against England in an unprecedented manner when England, our past colonial master came from nowhere and clinched the test series. But loss against England is not as severely felt as a loss against our arch rival Pakistan.
Today’s match is being played in Eden Garden here today that will test India’s resolve against a determined Pakistan. If two or three Indian batsmen are able to dig their heels and play long innings, even the best Pakistani attack will not be able to beat India. Pakistan’s batting is toothless and a few good overs by the Indian cricket team will be able to box Pakistani batting line up quite easily. We have seen as to how Pakistani batsmen have struggled the same way as Indian batsmen throughout the series and like Indian team, very few of their batsmen have performed during the series. So the match today is evenly poised and it will be a test of resolve for both the teams.
But if the last match is a yardstick, Indian batting will be tested by Pakistani pace battery of Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan and Umar Gul. They are among the best bowlers in the world right now and the way Junaid was able to swing the ball both ways, he is again going to be the biggest threat for India. In the first ODI match of the series, a superb display of swing bowling by Junaid Khan crippled India’s batting line-up on an overcast Chennai morning before MS Dhoni tried his beth –though in vain –to rescue his team with a fighting century. But Indian batsmen have more chances of success in Kolkata, where overhead conditions haven’t been as bowler-friendly and the curator Prabir Mukherjee has promised a “typical one-day wicket with lots of runs” with the side batting first having an early advantage. With India possessing a far better batting line up –at least on paper –if they win the toss and bat against Pakistan resolutely, they have a good chance of winning the match and levelling the series.
